About

I am planning a walk across Switzerland in Aug. – Sept. 2012.  At the end of my walk, I will meet Sandy in Geneva. We will spend the next 10 days in the Bernaise Oberland (home of the Eiger, Jungfrau, and Mönch) and the Valais, principally in Zermatt just below the Matterhorn. I am writing this Blog so friends, family and anyone else who is interested can follow my trek and enjoy the people and the experience.

Having just turned 69 on August 1, this walk is a bit of a challenge.  When walking in the Alps, the difficulty is not measured in total distance but in elevation gain (and loss) and total hours on the trail.  A friend made an apt comparison:  it is roughly the equivalent of doing a rin-to-rim traverse of the Grand Canyon every day for 16 days.

I hope you will leave comments if you like what you see. I apologize that I will not be able to reply to all comments.

  1. Will be following your journey! You are an inspiration to me, because you live life to the fullest and enjoy seeing the beauty of the world close-up! (Not only that, I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to blog on location!
I’ve linked your blog to mine: http://ohtheplaceswesee.com
Good luck and may you enjoy the journey!

  2. Hey John, I was in your Beast squad in 1967. I saw news of your trip at AOG and Instapundit. I wish you the best. I have done rim to rim and it is a tough hike. !6 days in a row is an accomplishment. Good luck, Mike

  3. Can’t wait to read more of your adventure. I am 61 yrs old and the owner of 6 heart stents. I don’t have any reason to not take on a hiking trip like yours so I shall overcome my reluctance and press on. I was a city bus driver in Toledo for almost 30yrs so sitting long hours didn’t help and no motivation to exercise….well, you get my point. I have been thinking about going to the Smoky Mtns. and climbing LeConte and reading your stuff is an encouragement. Keep posting and I’ll keep reading. I’ve got you bookmarked. I’m a transparent Facebook user under the name K Gregory Reihing if you are curious to know who is responding to your blog. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

    • Greg, you should definitely take a trip to the Smokies and climb LeConte. My dad, whom we’re all following here, climbed it many times with me and I miss the beauty of the Smoky Mountains; especially this time of year! Let us know when, not if, you do it.

  4. Maybe we missed you, but if you want some company and you’re near Zurich, let us know. We’d be happy to buy you a fresh-from-the-cow glass of milk (or something.

  5. I hiked down off the Schilthorn (in the Jungfrau above Murren and Gimmelwald) on my 26th birthday, and it was crazy-difficult. Bravo on your journey! I’ll look forward to seeing the region again through your eyes. I still think it is the most beautiful place on earth.

  6. hi grandaddy i cant belive you hike that far. i love you alot and im proud of you be careful can wait to see you afterwards.

  7. However, when you experience lower back pain with period symptoms it can be really distracting.
It is meant to be flexible and to supply a protective region for the major organs like the heart and the liver.

Physical therapy generally involves stretching, strengthening and exercising the
back in a safe and gentle manner.
